How I Met Your Mother

I’m somewhat of a fan of How I Met Your Mother, a CBS sitcom that has been running since 2005.  It follows the story of Ted Mosby, who, in 2030, tells his kids the story of how he met their mother; the story is told almost exclusively in flashbacks.

However, let’s not get into the details of the show.  Tonight’s newest episode, “Bad News” is the story of how Marshall and Lily verify if they can have a baby.  A secondary story is Robin’s first day at World Wide News, but that’s not the focus here. The episode is very light, airy, and comedic, but there was a hidden feature; a countdown from 50.

Numbers counting from fifty to one are printed on placards, folders, brochures, they are door numbers, numbers on magazines and books, and on the WWN televisions.  The numbers seem to be important at first, leading down to one.

Marshall, who knows he is capable of fathering a child, heads out of MacLaren’s (which is open until 3 am), to call his father to tell him the good news.  The phone, in his workshop, rings without being answered.  (The 2 is on a clock next to the phone.)  Lily exits cab #0001, and many expect she is informing Marshall she is pregnant.

Instead she reports Mr. Eriksen has had a heart attack.  He did not survive.

The countdown, which I thought was important, lead to terrible news, hence the title.

Very little of this will make sense unless you read the Wikipedia article.
