Yesterday, I had forgotten to write my post-a-day until it was too late.  To prevent this in future, I’m going to make use of the publish-schedule mode.

Onward with the pharmacokinetics!

Following oral administration, eszopiclone is extensively metabolized by oxidation and demethylation.

Oxidation is a chemical reaction, in which atoms have their oxidation number changed.  Demethylation is the removal of a methyl group.  It is often catalyzed by an enzyme such as Cytochrome P450.

The primary plasma metabolites are (S)-zopiclone-N-oxide and (S)-N-desmethyl zopiclone; the latter compound binds to GABA receptors with substantially lower potency than eszopiclone, and the former compound shows no significant binding to this receptor.
